Cays and Settlements
Bordering the island's southwest coast and minutes away from opulent Lyford Cay is a small and quiet community whose winding streets lead to one of New Providence's most tranquil beaches.
Born in the 1830s, Adelaide Village was one of several communities dedicated to freed blacks after the abolition of the slave trade in 1807. For many ex-slaves, the village was a refuge offering the opportunity to start a new life.
Today, the neighbourhood retains memorials reminding residents and visitors of its vivid past. Streets boast names like 'Liberated African Way,' and small wooden cottages are home to most of the village's few residents, who raise chickens and grow vegetables in modest plots.
With a creek that brings life to most of the area's mangroves, the location is ideal for bird watchers and nature lovers. Refreshments are available at one of the local restaurants, which offer simple, but affordable Bahamian dishes.
